Discovery Program

What is the Discovery Program?

All schools within Douglas County School District support gifted and advanced students using a variety of gifted programming and services. The Elementary Discovery Program is designed for students in 2nd through 6th grade "who require intensity of instruction and acceleration beyond what can reasonably be expected from the regular school program." In addition, all teachers within the Discovery Program must have a Gifted Education Specialist Endorsement or a Master's degree in gifted education from an accredited university.

Where is the program located?

The Elementary Discovery Program is a "self-contained, center based program for highly gifted learners currently housed within four elementary schools." Each Discovery Program site offers a unique range of gifted programming and extracurricular activities. We highly recommend visiting each school or attending a tour in the fall to evaluate each school's offerings.

How do I apply?

Students must apply for the Discovery Program and submit a complete body of evidence consisting of teacher recommendations, parent observations, assessment data and a handwritten statement by the student during the Discovery Program application window in the fall.

Applications are due on December 1st for enrollment in the following school year. For the 2017-18 school year, Discovery Program Applications must be submitted by December 1, 2016.

When will I be notified?

Applications are reviewed by a committee comprised of GT teachers, GT coordinators and school psychologists for placement in the Discovery Program. On the 2017-18 application, families may rank their preferred school sites. Discovery Program decisions are communicated by mail in late January.
